Abstract

The two papers presented in this session provide us with a fresh view regarding the process of agricultural growth in Mexico and Nigeria. Since I am in general agreement with the views presented and the explanations offered, this comment will be devoted to a comparison of the experience of these two countries with that of Argentina. Mr. Hertford's paper offers a sound explanation for the monumental growth of Mexico. Regarding crops, he identifies land reform and prices as the main forces underlying growth in the forties, while successful research has been instrumental in providing new inputs (mainly used in the modem sector of Mexican agriculture) in the last 10 or 15 years.
