Abstract

This study aims to verify the impact that mega-sporting events have had on the host venues' economic, social, public, and political structure since the 2000s. We considered the two major mega-sporting events, i.e., the Summer Olympics and the men's soccer World Cup. From this, we built a Legacy Index (LI) for the host venues, based on economic, environmental, infrastructure, social, and technological variables. The results show that both the Olympic Games and the World Cup can generate legacies, and these can be both positive and negative.
