Abstract
The article studied by M.M. Nejad, M.S. Momeni and K.N. Manahiloh (Soil Dynamics and Earthquake Engineering, 104, 2008, 54–63) needs some clarifications regarding the use of the Neural Network (NN) approach with Geographic Information System (GIS) for microzonation. The NN effort with the integration of GIS in the study is not a function approximation problem, thus it can not estimate shear wave velocity (Vs), as well as site classification. This discussion aims to present some controversial points of the article for the use of NN integrated with GIS for microzonation.
