Abstract

Vissers et al . (2017) performed muscovite 40Ar/39Ar geochronology on shear zones from the Northern Cap de Creus shear belt (Variscan basement of the eastern Pyrenees). They propose a model according to which these shear zones formed during Middle Jurassic extension associated with the opening of the Piemonte–Ligurian Ocean to the east. We argue that this model contradicts structural and tectonic evidence and is not sufficiently supported by geochronological data.
