Abstract

SummaryTwo cases of subacute progressive encephalitis are described. One patient died 11 months after the onset of the illness. The other is still alive after 33 months of illness. Both inoculation experiments on animals and attempts to cnltnre the virus gave negative results. I n Ciase 1, study of the brain showed sparse inflanimatory changes, chiefly in the central ganglia, sparse ganglion cell degeneration, diffuse demyelination in the fibres of the optic radiation, and intranuclear inclusion bodies in the cortex of the occipital lobe and the nuclei of the pons. Both cases exhibited the typical EEG changes. The specificity of these EEG changes is discussed.
