Abstract

DR. WILLIAM C. CIROCCO (Phoenix, Arizona): Although recurrence of rectal cancer is quite common and management multidisciplinary, the authors present an interesting analysis of a relatively rare entity, locoregional recurrence of colon cancer. They gathered 52 patients over roughly 20 years with nearly 50% resected outside of the Cleveland Clinic. 40% originally were early stage II, and four percent stage I. This begs the question of potential understaging of these 44% of patients, whether an adequate initial resection was performed. Perhaps many of these cases were actually stage III cancers with limited lymph node harvest leading to understaging and perhaps de facto evidence of nononcologic initial colectomy. Curative intent resection for loco-regionally recurrent colon cancer: Cleveland clinic experienceThe American Journal of SurgeryVol. 219Issue 3PreviewLocoregional colon cancer recurrence occurs in around 10% of patients following initial curative intent primary resection. We hypothesized oncological results can vary based on the recurrence site. Our aim was to determine outcomes for patients undergoing resection with curative intent for locally recurrent colon cancer.
