Abstract

A new method for the direct calculation of the transmitting directivity index for volumetric arrays is derived. The calculation is based on the solution of the linear algebraic formulation using Pritchard’s approximation of the mutual acoustic impedance between radiators in an array [J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 32, 730 (1960)], and the assumptions of negligible scattering and simple sources. Comparison with the receiving array directivity index is discussed, and is shown to be consistent with the array reciprocity principle.
