Abstract

Tremendous progress has been made in recent years in understanding positive ion formation in the D-region. The results of direct measurements (Narcisi, 1969) of D-region ion composition can now be understood on the basis of a reaction model calculated with measured reaction rate constants (Fehsenfeld and Ferguson, 1969; Ferguson and Fehsenfeld, 1969). Similar progress has been made on explaining the D-region negative ion chemistry, and some very successful results have been obtained in recent months (Ferguson, private communication).
