Abstract The 2022 Hansen Lecture gave a broad overview of the use of models in survey sampling, with emphasis on modeling approaches to incorporating auxiliary information in survey estimators. This discussion expands upon some issues in model-assisted estimation, exploring data needs and the availability of multipurpose weights for advanced modeling methods.
