Abstract
The discusser commends the authors for their interpretation of the mechanisms of sand flow failure, and contributes to the discussion on three separate points. The discusser is pleased that research performed over ten years ago still has current practical applications, identifies a fundamental difference between previous research on prefailure instability and the instability mentioned in the original article from July 2004, and inquires about an outcome the authors may have encountered during a reconsolidation stage in the triaxial test.
