Abstract

A large and long-existing literature employs analytical optimization methods to derive reservoir operating rules for multireservoir systems. These date back to rules for minimizing spill from parallel reservoirs by Bower et al. 1966 and Clark 1950 . Lund and Guzman 1999 summarize such analytically derived optimal operating rules for some simple multireservoir systems under specific conditions and criteria. Lund 2000 uses analytical optimization for hydropower operations with multiple reservoirs. More complex multireservoir problems have been examined analytically and partially analytically using interesting extensions of Varlet’s 1922 and Masse’s 1946 single reservoir methods MorelSeytoux 1999 .
