Abstract

I wish to comment on the paper by N. C. Matalas, ‘Mathematical Assessment of Synthetic Hydrology,’ with regard to calculating the coefficients of equation 13.Assume that the cells of M0 and M1 are directly derived from data. This implies thatA may be found using equation 16, which leaves the solution of B as the item of interest. Define C = M0 − M1M0−1M1t; thus, C = BBt. Matalas demonstrates that B is not unique. The fact that C is symmetric permits a simple and direct solution for B, which avoids the application of principal component analysis.
