Abstract

Studying the possibility of discrimination of low energy proton and alpha particle tracks, we examined the grain density distribution of 2.7 MeV proton and 4.5 MeV alpha particle tracks in Ilford KO nuclear emulsions 200 μm thick developed according to M. Muchnik, with an amidol developer, in a two stage development. It is possible to discriminate completely and with certainty the two particles. The mean grain density of proton tracks is (0.48 ± 0.14) grains/ μm and that of alpha particle tracks is (1.38 ± 0.13) grains/ μm. The energy resolution of alpha particles amounts to 8.96%.
