Abstract

We introduce the cosine modulated filter bank (CMFB) as a multicarrier modulation (MCM) tool for wideband data transmission over wireless channels. In the past, under the name discrete wavelet multitone (DWMT) modulation, CMFB has been considered for data transmission over digital subscriber lines (DSL). We propose a new receiver structure that is different from those proposed previously. The new structure simplifies the task of channel equalization, by reducing the number of equalizer parameters significantly. We also propose a novel blind equalization algorithm that fits very nicely into the proposed structure. The bit-error rate (BER) of the proposed transceiver is compared against the results obtained from an OFDM (DFT-based MCM) system. Even though the proposed system may suffer from inter-carrier/inter-channel interference (ICI), the effect of ICI is not noticeable in the practical range of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), 30 dB or less.
