Abstract

Two disjunct populations of the potentially threatened Larch Mountain salamander Plethodon larselli were found in the central Cascade Range of Washington. These records contradict the current view that P. larselli is restricted to lava talus slopes in the Columbia River Gorge between Washington and Oregon. The data confirm previous speculation that P. larselli is a declining relict that once occupied a broad geographic area. Because these newly found populations may be genetically distinct from those in the Gorge, we recommend that potential threats be evaluated and appropriate management actions taken to ensure their survival.
