H. ; Aaronson, M. ; Illingworth, G. Abstract The authors report the first definite detection of Cepheid variables in M101, a galaxy of fundamental importance to the extragalactic distance scale. The Cepheids are the most distant ever found, and their discovery illustrates the ready feasibility of sampling through modern digital means these most primary of standard candles over a wide volume of the universe.
