Abstract

Genomics has become a part of modern life. We are blasé about the fact that a quick DNA test can determine paternity, or that pregnant women routinely have their babies screened for genetic diseases. The launch last year of a commercial test called deCODEme means that, for about US$985, anyone can create a genetic profile to predict their chance of developing several conditions. But it raises a question that has plagued geneticists for years: just because someone can find out about their health risks, does it mean they should? Inside DNA seeks to answer these and other urgent questions in genomics. With the backing of the UK's Wellcome Trust and the Sanger Institute, the exhibition draws on the experience of a formidable panel of experts, including John Sulston and Steve Jones. This pedigree explains one of the exhibition's key strengths—its fearlessness in explaining complex genetic concepts. For example, one of the most complex exhibits, The Chromosome Book, is impressive: an interactive screen shows all the human chromosomes, and zooming in on one highlights where genes for major diseases are located. The complexity of Inside DNA doesn't mean it's dull, far from it—one of the best exhibits looks at DNA's role in forensic science. A crime scene and a courtroom are depicted with striking 1940s Hollywood film noir graphics in a virtual environment navigable by a movable screen. Elsewhere, screens that feature scientists talking passionately about their work in cutting-edge areas reveal the Wellcome Trust's history of public engagement with science. There is also a News and Views area, in which visitors' opinions on ethical issues in genetics are to be anonymised and fed into government policy on future research via the Human Genetics Commission. Complex but well explained science, exciting technology, and real public engagement—with any luck, Inside DNA represents the future of science exhibitions.
