Abstract

This chapter reviews the main approaches to discourse analysis to give the reader a clearer insight into the main development of discourse and the main approaches and frameworks that deal with discourse and social change, which are of direct relevance to this book. Although other approaches and frameworks are introduced and discussed, the main focus is on CDA, particularly Fairclough’s approach. CDA has been chosen as the main discipline here because it offers, in my view, adequate tools and mechanisms for the analysis of discourse and social change. It offers a variety of approaches and frameworks, some of which allow us to closely study the development of discourse and its link to the wider social, cultural and political contexts. As this book is about the transition of Arabic political discourse, CDA will enable us to examine this transition by adopting a textual and social analysis of discourses. This chapter will not attempt to cover all approaches related to discourse analysis, but will be selective and only cover those that deal with language in its social context.
