Abstract

Abstract The n-alkyl derivative of tetrakis(n-pentyldithiolato)dinickel(II), 1a, has a monotropic discotic lamellar (DL) phase, whereas the branched-chain-substituted derivative of tetrakis(1-ethylpentyldithiol-ato)dinickel(II), 1b, has both an enantiotropic discotic hexagonal disordered columnar (Dhd) mesophase and a monotropic DL mesophase. Thus, we could change the mesomorphism from lamellar to columnar by changing the n-alkyl chain to the branched chain. This is a new branching effect, because this phenomenon has not been reported to date in the literature.
