Abstract

The Smart Transformer (ST) is a Solid State Transformer (SST) with dc-link connectivity and advanced control functionalities for achieving high efficiency and reliability. The Cascaded H-Bridge (CHB) converter has been proposed as an option to realize the MV stage with its modularity and multi-level output, and for the isolated DC/DC stage, the Dual Active Bridge (DAB) is a possible solution as it provides the galvanic isolation with a high efficiency. Normally, the power is equally distributed in the cells of the modular converter, but this does not take into consideration that different cells can have a different remaining useful lifetime. The power routing instead proposes unequal power loading of each cell in dependence of the useful remaining lifetime. This paper proposes the discontinuous modulation to instantaneously modify the power distribution among the DAB converters and the loss distribution of the CHB cells. This feature enables to actively influence the remaining useful lifetime of the ST building blocks with higher flexibility.
