Abstract

Disconnection events (DEs) from Halley's comet are analyzed as a group (in order to minimize the impact of uncertainties in any single event) for correlation with solar-wind features. This analysis utilizes new coronal source-surface model results and new fitting techniques to determine the best calculated heliospheric current sheet (HCS) location. Details for several DEs are presented. The results confirm that the 19 DEs are associated with crossings of the HCS. No other property of the solar wind shows a one-to-one association with DEs. Thus, theoretical efforts should concentrate on conditions at HCS crossings (see Y. Yiet al., 1996,J. Geophys. Res.101, 27,586–27,601).
