Abstract

Analysis of the discharge of a constant-volume vessel from thermodynamic viewpoint provides an interesting didactic application of the First and Second Laws, as well as of the linkage between open and closed systems. General expressions are derived for description of the physical process and common situations like adiabatic and isothermal discharge are discussed in detail. Examples are provided to illustrate the consequences of making inappropriate assumptions.
