Abstract

An ultrathin electrolytic cell has been used to study by means of microscopic observation morphological changes of particles at magnification of 1500× in situ during discharge in various electrolytes. It is shown that the solubility of three‐valent manganese species plays an important role in certain electrolytes, depending on pH. The discharge mechanism is discussed in the light of the observed dissolution and on the basis of x‐ray data of the solid reaction products.
