Abstract

Organ scarcity in liver transplantation (LT) underlies candidate attrition on the waiting list. In the most recent OPTN report, of waitlisted adults followed over 3 years, only 58.7% were transplanted, while 11.8% died and 19.4% were removed from the list for other reasons.1 Improvements in donation, recovery, and allocation have contributed to an increase in LT activity from 6494 to 8896 over a decade with living donors accounting for under 5% of the volume over this time (https://optn.transplant.hrsa.gov/data/).
