Abstract
During the past century, several million people have perished from natural disasters, and several million more have been displaced by these same disasters. More recently, a number of natural disasters have occurred (for example, the tsunami in Indonesia, the earthquake in Pakistan, and the hurricanes in the Gulf States) that killed or displaced several hundred thousand people. This underscores the need for disaster planning for natural and technological disasters based on the probability that disasters will occur throughout the world.
