Abstract

Damage to the lungs caused by dust fumes or noxious substances inhaled by workers in certain specific occupations in the Federal Republic of Germany is known as occupational lung disease. The most common diseases are coal workers’ pneumoconiosis, silicosis and asbestosis. They are already recognized by a law, which has set up a benefit program for persons disabled by pneumoconiosis and their dependents and for surviving widows and children of those who die from the effects of those diseases. The different forms of pneumoconiosis recognized by law are listed in Table 1.
