Abstract

When resisters intend to construct a counter-project to capitalism, finding an autonomous space in which they can experiment alternative practices is not enough. They also have to re-consider meanings and roles associated with monies. As a reified symbol of capitalism, money disturbs and forces resisters in creating new meanings and practices. But how does a disturbing element can turn into a source of creativity? Based on an ethnographic study in an intentional community, this paper analyzes the mechanisms developed by participants to deal with money. It is argued that distancing and legitimation processes are necessarily accompanied by creative mechanisms in which money’s alternative roles and meanings are materialized. The practice of parrhesia, the culture of contestation, and the non-hierarchical structure have been identified as facilitating conditions for fostering the creative potential of disturbing objects.
