1have shown that directly observed treatment (DOT) for tuberculosis, over three times as expensive as self-supervision under field conditions, did not offer any improvement in successful completion in the South African metropolitan setting. Somewhat similar results were recorded in routine monitoring within the Indian National Tuberculosis Programme (NTP) during pre-DOTS (DOT short-course) days. 2 Supervision
