Abstract

The paper describes the various directional techniques with the geological motivation that are available to the earth scientist in the analysis of data on a sphere We give important diagnostic tools. The well-known Fisher distribution and the Bingham distribution are illustrated by examples from pole reversal and calcite grains respectively. The recent development of the modelling of data clustered around a small circle or a small arc is described, with reference to its motivation in plate tectonics and local magnetic field changes. Finally,a problem in natural remanent magnetism is discussed.
