Abstract

An experimental LEIS study was performed to investigate neutralization and focussing effects occurring in Ne + → Cu(100) scattering. Photograms of ions, neutralized particles and ion survival probabilities are presented for scattering angles θ = 45° and θ = 112.5°. Azimuthal spectra at specular reflection ( θ = 45°) show strong focussing (for symmetric trajectories). For an elevation angle of incidence of Ψ = 24° and perpendicular ejection the ion survival probability is virtually the same for ions reflected from first and second layer atoms. A strong locally variable efficiency of the first layer for neutralization on the incoming part of the trajectory is found.
