Abstract
Directional correlation measurements with a cylindrically symmetric reaction geometry on the 24Mg( 3He, pγ) 26Al reaction lead to the following definite spin assignments: J = 1 for the 3719 keV level, J = 2 for the 2913 and 3159 keV levels, J = 3 for the 2365 and 2545 keV levels and J = 5 for the 3405 keV level. A probable spin assignment J = (2) is suggested for the 3745 keV level, and the spin of the 3074 keV level is limited to J = 3 or 2. Evidence for a doublet near 3960 keV is presented. Gamma-ray decay modes for the members of the doublet (labelled the 3950 and 3960 keV levels) have been deduced from the p- γ two-parameter spectra. Directional correlation measurements on the γ-rays de-exciting these levels restrict the spin of the 3950 keV level to J = 3 or 1 and the spin of the 3960 keV level to J = 1 or 0 (in order of preference). Branching ratios of each level and multipole mixing ratios for each transition determined from the directional correlations are reported.
