Abstract

The present study is a challenge to visualizing the high-temperature dissolution dynamics of an α-Al2O3(0 0 0 1) crystal surface buried in an oxide-based melt flux of Sn:BiOx above 1000 °C with a confocal scanning laser microscope. The formation of triangular pits consisting of the R-planes was kinetically dominant at the initial stage of the dissolution process. It was then followed by their shapes gradually approaching to hexagonal-like ones consisting of the M- and R-planes. A preliminary estimation was also attempted of the activation energies for the dissolution process and the result was then discussed in comparison to those previously reported.
