Abstract

This paper presents the sizing design sensitivity analysis of beam and frame structures using the direct variational method. This approach only requires the solution of the original problem with new imposed loading and can easily be implemented in a commercial finite element program. The derivation of the imposed pseudo-load for design sensitivity analysis of different cross-sectional design variables is presented. The capability of this method is demonstrated with some numerical examples.
