Abstract

Work was planned to develop and characterize packaging films using ultrasound treated muskmelon seed meal. Nine films were prepared by treating solution of muskmelon seed meal with varying ultrasound treatment time and power. The films were designated as A (30 min, 100 W), B (30 min, 150 W), C (30 min, 200 W), D (45 min, 100 W), E (45 min, 150 W), F (45 min, 200 W), G (60 min, 100 W), H (60 min, 150 W) and I (60 min, 200 W) and a control film was prepared without ultrasound treatment, keeping the ratio of muskmelon seeds meal and water a constant of 6 g/100 ml. Mechanical properties, barrier properties and optical properties were analyzed for all the films. Tensile strength was found the highest 1134.70 kPa in film I and elongation of 18.86% in film C. The water vapor permeability was found to be the lowest in film A (30 min, 100 W). Both ultrasound treatment time and power significantly affects the properties of the developed films.
