Abstract

AbstractDirect shear strength of the natural rock joints is critical for transportation projects happened in rock mass. Direct shear strength of the natural jointed rock is important design parameter for designing the foundation of piers in Chenab railway bridge project in Kashmir; slope stability of rock mass in Konkan Railway and Western Ghat railway projects. Direct shear strength of the natural rock joints depends on the joint roughness, joint compressive strength, rate of shearing, overburden pressure in the form of normal load and boundary condition. Previous works estimated the direct shear strength of rock mass through plaster of paris samples with various degree of asperities. In this study, we estimated the influence of joint roughness coefficient (JRC) on the direct shear strength of the natural jointed rock in direct shear environment under various boundary conditions. Results indicate that higher order of JRC does not guarantee the maximum direct shear strength of the natural jointed rock.KeywordJRCJCSShear strengthNatural jointsBoundary condition
