Abstract

Abstract A direct-reading emission spectrograph for the quantitative determination of beryllium on one-inch diameter filter paper discs has been developed to relieve the workload on the industrial hygiene chemistry laboratory. The instrument, constructed in our own shops, uses a Bausch and Lomb grating monochromator as its basic unit. Operation of the spectrograph is automatic; the amount of beryllium on the filter paper is read directly from a meter. The filter paper sample discs are used with specially designed high-purity graphite electrodes. Spark excitation of the sample is by a small Bausch and Lomb spark source. The instrument is suitable for detecting concentrations of beryllium ranging from 0.01 to 10 micrograms.
