Abstract

We discuss the results and conclusions to be drawn from direct photon measurements in ultra‐relativistic heavy ion collisions at the CERN SPS and at RHIC. The direct photon results provide upper limits on the initial temperature of the hot‐dense matter produced in central A+A collisions which imply that the system exists in a state with a large number of degrees of freedom, as expected for a deconfined Quark Gluon Plasma. At RHIC energies the preliminary direct photon results indicate that the observed hadron suppression is a final state effect, as expected due to parton energy loss in the produced matter.
