Abstract

The concept and some experimental results for single beam laser power modulation overwrite using magneto-statically coupled multilayers are described. The auxiliary magnetic layer(s) is coupled to the storage layer via the non-magnetic thermal control layer. The leakage field from the auxiliary magnetic layer(s) is modulated by the laser power level. The effective field direction is changed by leakage field modulation. Three methods for leakage field generation are reviewed. Experimental results for the method using a perpendicular thermo-magnetic biasing layer are described. The present status and the capability in the future development of magneto-statically coupled multilayer overwriting are clarified.
