Abstract
Al–Ti–B alloys, including TiB2 particles, are an empirical grain refiner for cast Al and Al alloys. Hexagonal platelets comprising TiB2 particles are generally accepted to possess a high nucleation potency. Herein, the cast Al microstructures, inoculated by Al–Ti–B alloys, were visualized by multiscale computed tomography (CT), which combines micro-CT having a wide-field and low-resolution and nano-CT having a narrow-field and high-resolution. Micro-CT captured the entire crystal grain while nano-CT captured the aggregated TiB2 particles that exist within the center of the grain. We discussed the possibility that the aggregate act as nucleation site.
