Abstract

The Gibraltar Pilot Experiment was carried out in June 1984 in order to obtain preliminary moored current measurements in the vicinity of the sill in the Strait of Gibraltar. Bottom‐mounted Doppler current measurements and moored temperature measurements from this experiment show directly the westward transport of Western Mediterranean Deep Water (WMDW) over the sill. The net westward transport of WMDW over the sill is roughly estimated to be 0.2×106 m3 s−1.
