Abstract

Direct measurement of the shear induced backbone segment orientation and deformation of the polymeric chromophore polydiacetylene 4‐butoxycarbonylmethylurethane (4BCMU) in semi‐dilute solution has been performed using an extended dichroism technique. At low shear rates the random coil, visco‐elastic polymer shows orientation of the segments in the flow direction. At high shear rates the segments orient perpendicular to the flow direction with a reduction in the average conjugation length. The results show that coil shrinkage occurs for this visco‐elastic polymer at high shear rates. We postulate that the initial alignment of the prolate random coils is unstable at high shear rates when the coils “ball up” in the flow.
