Abstract

The cover photograph and the one on this page detail the auroral effects of electron showers. The aurorae displayed over the northern polar regions were photographed on three orbits of the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) F2 satellites on December 2, 1977, the day selected by the International Magnetosphere Study for intensive study. The colored spectra superimposed vertically over the aurora represent measurements of the Bremsstrahlung X rays caused by the precipitating electron showers. The higher the intensity, the higher the vertical rise of the spectra. These X rays are being successfully measured for the first time by a new DMSP sensor developed by the Aerospace Corporation. Paul F. Mizera of Aerospace Corporation displayed these unusual photographs as part of his paper, ‘The Auroral Regions During December 2,1977,’ presented at the 1978 Fall Meeting.
