Abstract

Identification of individual components of essential oils by comparative techniques (GC-MS and/or13C NMR) can be carried out exclusively for compounds whose spectroscopic data are compiled in computerized libraries. Otherwise, the compound should be isolated and submitted to a full set of spectroscopic analyses. In this paper we report on the direct identification of the two major components of Chamaemelum fuscatum (Brot.) Vasconcellos essential oil using “Extraction NMR”. Indeed, 2-methylallyl isobutyrate and ( E)-2-methyl-2-butenyl methacrylate have been identified, without previous isolation, by combination of the data from one and two-dimensional NMR spectra of the essential oil.
