Abstract

Hydrogen production by water electrolysis is a consolidated technology field, but in the last few years the interest is growing. The increasing interest for higher efficiency and low volume hydrogen storage, and the supposed growth of renewable energy power systems have recently motivated new efforts in this domain. In this framework, hydrogen production directly at high pressure is raising increasing interest: in a certain range of pressure, this solution shows higher overall efficiency (from electric power to already compressed hydrogen), and even a positive effect on the system cost thanks to the elimination of the compressor or of some compression stages. Main topic of the paper is the development and validation of the polarisation model of an alpha-prototype laboratory scale electrolyser, developed by Giner Electrochemical Systems (US) and tested thanks to the test bench built at the Dipartimento di Energetica of the Politecnico di Torino in the framework of an agreement with Sapio Spa (Monza, Milan, Italy).
