Abstract

After a brief introduction explaining the reasons of the revival of interest of elementary particle physicists in cosmic ray (CR) research I will report on the main results of the present balloon program in the study of the elementary particle component of CR (p+, e−, e+, p−, muons at different depths, and also deuteron and He) and on the RIM (Russian-Italian Mission) program on Resource satellites. The talk will describe the characteristics and expected performance of the three flights foreseen for the RIM program: the NINA experiment (already approved and funded by INFN in Italy and by MEPhI and VNIIEM in Moscow) mainly dedicated to the anomalous component of CR, the PAMELA experiment studying the antimatter component of CR and the R&D for the GILDA experiment to explore the high energy gamma ray sources.
