Abstract

We calculate the dc electric field induced second harmonic generation of flexible molecules and polymers. We employ the bond additivity approximation for the dipole moment and the first and second hyperpolarizabilities μ, β, and γ, respectively, and the rotational isomeric state approximation and matrix multiplication methods of Flory. Illustrative calculations are presented for poly(oxyethylene dimethyl ether) versus chain length and for poly(p-nitrostyrene) versus tacticity.
