Abstract

Summary form only given. A novel metallographic technique for direct correction between device and their technological parameters of one inch long fused biconical taper (FBT) couplers is presented. The results show that the taper shape with a smaller taper angle (17/spl deg/) exhibits a lower excess loss (0.13 dB) than those of taper shape with a larger taper angle (340) and a higher excess loss (0.34 dB). The taper angle of the device parameters was controlled by their fabrication parameters of the filament range, filament speed, pulling speed, and gas flow rate. Therefore, by accurate controlling of the fabrication parameters, and hence the taper angle of the device parameter, FBT couplers with high yield and high performance have been fabricated successfully. To the best of the author's knowledge, this is the first time that the taper angles related to their technological parameters were directly measured during fiber coupler manufacture.
