Abstract

The under-representation of girls in the physical sciences, particularly physics, has long been a subject of concern and investigation in many countries. Various strategies have been devised to address this problem and these have met with different degrees of success. In Ireland in 1985, as part of a national programme for equal opportunities in education, the Science Inspectorate of the Department of Education introduced a scheme to increase the number of schoolgirls studying physics and chemistry. It has achieved excellent results and is still in place.
