Most centres in the UK and USA use either a posterior or lateral approach for hip arthroplasty. In recent years, with more focus on enhanced recovery and reducing length of in-patient stay, there has been increased interest in the potential advantages the direct anterior approach (DAA) to the hip can bring. This article provides a brief overview of the DAA and discusses advantages and disadvantages of this approach.
