Abstract

Gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH) has direct actions on the rat ovary (1). Specific GnRH receptors have been demonstrated on rat (2) and human (3) ovaries. While hypothalamic GnRH is not believed to reach the ovary in sufficient concentration to influence its function, evidence exists for a locally made rat ovarian GnRH-like molecule (4). A GnRH-like molecule may play a role in the local control of follicular response to gonadotropins. Specific receptors for GnRH have not been detected by radioreceptor assays in porcine, equine or bovine ovaries (5). The experiments presented in this paper were aimed at examining whether GnRH or a GnRH-like molecule might play a role in regulation of follicular development in the porcine ovary.
